As all people involved with embroidery craft would know,
bead embroidery is the technique of adding beads to fabric with the help of
embroidery stitches. Beaded embroidery embellishes all types of things-
right from clothing to bags and from shoes to soft furnishings. Unique
handcrafted pieces are prepared using decorative beaded embroidery patterns.
Common Bead Embroidery Techniques
Bead embroidery is, in fact an
alternative to freehand bead weaving.
Beaded Embroidery Technique 1- Ancient Method
Bead embroidery in earlier periods- as early as 12th century- was done
through sketching designs onto parchment and then doing embroidery. The
beaded vellum thus produced was used as an appliqué on fabric. The
bead embroidery was generally done in laid work. In this method, the beads
were strung onto one thread and then laid on the design in the desired way.
It was then couched into place with a second needle and thread. The beaded
string could carry multiple beads as per the wish of the embroiderer. Beaded
embroidery was an expensive art at that time as it used gemstone beads for
the purpose. Coral gemstones were used for red, lapis for blue, pearls for
white and so on.
Beaded Embroidery Technique 2- Modern Method
The modern beaded embroidery uses modified stitches. The embroidery pattern
is traced on a piece of fabric and with the help of certain stitches, the
bead embroidery is done on that fabric as per the design. The excess fabric
is trimmed and the resulting beaded embroidered embellishment is sewn or
glued to anything which may be a garment, bag, shoe or any other item.
